here's what governor romney said followed by governor jindal's response. >> what the president's came pain did was focus on certain members of his base coalition, give them extraordinary financial gifts from the government, and then work very aggressively to turn them out to vote. >> absolutely reject that notion, that description. i think that's absolutely wrong. i don't think that represents where we are as a party and going as a party. >> let me bring in ed rendell, also msnbc political analyst, "the washington post" nia henderson, raul reyes and nbc deputy political director mark murray, who just obtained a copy of the rnc presentation of why they lost. i won't reveal what says. i'll let mark do that. in the meantime, governor rendell, let me start off with you. you have a statement from mitt romney's team and it says governor romney was simply elaborating on what david axelrod had said about the obama campaign's effort to target key demographics, most specifically women. it's interesting because they note most specifically women, when i know you recall ann romney getting on stage

i'm sure that governor romney is spending time with his family. and my hope is before the end of the year, though, we have a chance to sit down and talk. there are certain aspects of governor romney's record and his ideas that i think could be very helpful. to give you one example, i think he did a terrific job running the olympics. and that skill set of trying to figure out how do we make something work better applies to the federal government. there are a lot of ideas that i don't think are partisan ideas but are just smart ideas about how can we make the federal government more customer friendly, how can we make sure that we're consolidating programs that are duplicative. how can we eliminate additional waste? he presented ideas in the course of the campaign that i agree with and so it would be interesting to talk to him about smog -- something like that. there may be ideas he has with respect to jobs and growth that can help middle class families that i want to hear. so i'm not either prejudges what he's interested in doing, nor am i suggestin

against these comments and saying it's ridiculous and not the reason governor romney lost. what's the reaction been like in washington? >> republicans are very disappointed by this, and there are three big reasons. first of all, this is sour grapes, like this certainly isn't gracious. second, it's just not accurate. there were many, many other factors that were involved, gifts to minorities were not the reason that president obama won the white state of new hampshire, the largely white state of iowa. it's not why he won the hometown of paul ryan, janesville, wisconsin. so there's just a factual issue. but third and biggest, and this is where you heard the louisiana governor, bobby jindal, installed yesterday as the chairman of the republican governors association. this is where you heard him coming in, that republicans say this is a just-doesn't-get-it moment for romney. it makes republicans think that the 47% comment was no slip of the tongue. at his press conference in las vegas yesterday, governor jindal, our reporter, says became visibly agitated about this and said the

why is it that republicans are elected governor, but mitt romney could not win the presidency? >> i think mitt is a good and decent man. we talked a lot about that here yesterday. 30 republican governor, the most we had in a dozen years. most of the battle ground states have republican governors in them leading the way, turning things around, balancing budgets, doing it while lowering tax, seeing revenues go up by improving the economy in each state. i think the reason is we laid out a clear path, clear agenda. people gravitated toward that. and unfortunately, mitt romney's campaign in the end was not able to overcome the early attacks from the obama campaign back in june and they suffered the inability to clearly lay that out. republican governors as a contrast have been able to offer a clear plan for each of our states. we're going to change america one state at a time. we're optimistic about the future with great leadership here. >> gretchen: thanks for getting >> thank you. >> gretchen: your e-mails on oak trees and allergies and chopping them down next time something made
